Chiropractor
Chiropractic is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation (1).
The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine, and pelvis) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health (2).
The skull protects the delicate tissues of the brain. The moving bones of the spine protect the intricate communication pathways of the spinal cord and nerve roots. If these nervous system pathways are impaired, malfunction of the tissue and organ function throughout the body can result (2).
Chiropractors use a variety of techniques to reduce pain and improve mobility and function. The one system that most people associate with chiropractic is hand-delivered manipulation of the spine. Some chiropractors call this an ‘adjustment’. They may also use other techniques and/or modalities like heat, ice, massage, specific exercises, ultrasound and acupuncture (3).
Chiropractic also places an emphasis on nutrition and exercise, wellness, and healthy lifestyle modifications (2).
Statutory Registration of chiropractic is mandatory in order for practitioners to practise in Australia (4).
