  • For depression: Products containing oligosaccharides from the root of ba ji tian have been used at doses of 300-800 mg daily for 6-8 weeks.

Ba ji tian might increase or decrease blood sugar. Diabetes medications are used to lower blood sugar. Taking ba ji tian along with diabetes medications might increase or decrease the effects of these medications. Monitor your blood sugar levels closely if you use ba ji tian and take medications for diabetes. The dose of your diabetes medications may need to be changed.

Some medications used for diabetes include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Interactions with herbs & supplements

Herbs and supplements that might lower blood sugar: Ba ji tian might increase or decrease blood sugar. Using it with herbs and supplements that lower blood sugar might increase or decrease the effects of these herbs and supplements in people with diabetes. Some of these products include alpha-lipoic acid, bitter melon, chromium, devil's claw, fenugreek, garlic, guar gum, horse chestnut, Panax ginseng, psyllium, Siberian ginseng, and others.

Action

Ba ji tian might help treat depression by increasing the effects of serotonin, a chemical found in the brain. Also, ba ji tian contains chemicals that might reduce inflammation and regulate levels of hormones or other chemicals in the body.
